From some crazy copyright lawsuits to some complicated beauty enhancement technology, here are 10 things the film industry doesn’t want you to know. Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 3. Everyone is Altered You really think movie stars look all that great with no makeup on or without going under the knife? Probably not. Sure it’s normal to wear makeup, but what else do they do? Skilled digital artists use highly specialized software which allows them to enhance certain features. You might have noticed it a couple times with Angelina Jolie. This is known as beauty work and it done during post production, enhancing not only the face but also that body. Many claim this has negatively impacted beauty standards of modern society. Every pore follicle, every wrinkle, any imperfection just digitally removed creating almost digital actors of flawlessness. The media creating unrealistic portrayals of beauty, many people will feel more self conscious about minor imperfections. The practice was for a while was only reserved for Brad pitt or tom cruise type stars but with technology constantly advancing, everyone could be a hologram! For example, toms face might not be perfectly symmetrical as you can see in this photo. But with some adjustments, he’d look as good as new. Some claim that movies from the 1930’s to 1960’s are the most the real of the films that were made and actually feature real human interaction. Movies that have been re released with digital enhancement and many have felt like they were ruining the originals 2. Fake Reviews Have you ever heard rave reviews about certain movies but then when you finally go to watch them, you think they were a bunch of garbage? Well that’s possibly because they were given fake reviews. Many of the movie trailers will show reviews saying things like, “stunning”, mesmerizing, breathtaking. The truth is though, it costs a lot to actually market the videos, so they just don’t really give a darn if they’re lying. You think they’re going to show reviews during a movie trailer? Definitely not! Critics are often suckered into reviewing movies with plenty of free perks that come along with it, if you know what we mean. In other cases, movie studios have played footage of what looks like your ordinary auditorium full of movie goers. But the truth is, they were all employees of that movie theater and using the footage for promotional purposes. Many of the movie reviews are simply just fake news. Users on reddit have claimed that their day at work often consisted of making fake accounts to sites like IMDB or rotten tomatoes and publishing biased reviews. 1.Plagiarizing It’s clear many hollywood actors have no respect for the law and many box office hits have been accused of plagiarizing. Shia LaBeouf has even been accused of plagiarizing a script for one of his short films and went on to apologize for his actions. During the Cannes Film festival in France, Shia’s film howardcantour.com was praised until it went online in 2011. The original creator came out and pointed out all the similarities. But this isn’t the only case by any means. There have been a few cases of Russian films being plagiarized from such as Avatar and the Martian. They think that just because they’re across the world that they won’t notice. The film the Hunger Games is accused of copying from a version of Battle Royale from Japan. The film the Matrix was also accused by people who claimed they had sent their script into the studio for review. But without the powerful lawyers they needed, the case became rather complicated and it was only settled for a relatively small amount. It’s hard to imagine that all of these movies were completely original despite the conclusions for the court cases.

The Ethiopian lawyer and women's rights activist discusses the matter-of-fact way too many patriarchal men treat rape. Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/meaza-ashenafi-discusses-difret Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript - Ethiopia is a country with over 19 million population and the country was a long history very rich culture. And unfortunately some of the traditional practices and norms affect women negatively. And the practice of telefa, which is abducting girls for marriage, is one of the harmful practices that affect the physical and mental as well as social-economic lives of women in Ethiopia. I heard about the story on the radio. I was in a car. I was a driver and we were listening to a radio and there was media coverage about 14-years-old girl being abducted and raped and killing her would the husband. So as soon as I learned about the story, I immediately thought that we should be going to this place, which is 300 km outside of Addis Ababa where we work. And we should be able to defend the girl. I thought about this because I believed that we should save her life because she was facing like a life sentence. And secondary, also I knew that this is going to be a big case, precedent-setting case, which we could use for public education to enhance the dialogue and the conversation around abduction around telefa. Such a story is, for some people, especially people living in the West, it's completely outside their experience; in that sense it will educate people on how women live in the other part of the world. Secondly, it's also a call to action. I believe educational institutions, women's rights organizations and government and non-government institutions whose mandate focus on gender equality would like to use this film for advocacy, for legal reform and to sort of enhance and accelerate programs towards especially fighting child marriage around the world. That's my hope. Getting Angelina Jolie was quite helpful — the movie, the content, the history, the presentation is fantastic, but her agreeing to be executive producer really took it to another level, to another height and I think that was kind of her. I think this film is quite educational in that sense because it does not necessarily judge the community. It does not necessarily sort of point a finger to the community; it sort of shows where the thinking comes from. So it sort of makes you to have a conversation with yourself because it makes you — it's not an easy sort of sin because these people, they have lived with this tradition for a number of years and that's what they know. That's what they believe. From time to time we need to go back to the drawing board and we need to have some real conversation on why these things are happening. It's not enough to say, "Well it's the culture; well it's a tradition." We need to discuss about, unpack and discuss about why this is happening.

The history of law’s representation is as old as storytelling, but its manifestation in moving pictures elevates the significance of law and its subjects to questions and concerns about the rule of law and equal citizenship in a well-functioning democracy. Professor Silbey traces the appearance and development of the formal legal system (in particular the courtroom process) from the beginning of film in 1895 to the present day, with references to other forms of popular culture, such as television and video. This event was presented as part of the NU@Noon series. To learn more, please visit: https://www.northeastern.edu/alumni/nunoon/.

Jacksfilms Emoji Movie Review ►► http://bit.ly/2uKg4Lm Spongebob's Ultimate MEME! ►► http://bit.ly/2owj9vh Okay, so The Emoji Movie is pretty darn bad. But that badness doesn't actually come from the movie itself. I mean, sure, The Emoji Movie is predictable and has cringe-worthy jokes and has a really awful "try hard to be hip for the kids" premise...but that's true of a lot of movies. No, The Emoji Movie is bad because it's one huge commercial. A commercial that is targeting children while blatantly breaking rules established by the FTC and FCC for disclosing branded advertising. So how deep does this rabbit hole go? Get ready for some Angry Judge emoji. This informational presentation examines the troubling lack of gender equality in today's film industry. By studying the legal framework that supported the fight for gender equality in other industries and analyzing the inherent bias and overt sexism that has contributed to the lack of opportunity for female filmmakers, Katherine hopes to outline a path to a brighter future for female filmmakers. This will be a fun opportunity to lean about your workplace rights as a filmmaker and a woman and will provide information and tools you can use to better navigate our industry. Q & A to follow. About Katherine Pfost: Katherine is an entertainment attorney and filmmaker currently splitting her time between Los Angeles and Nashville. After graduating from the University of San Diego she attended Belmont College of Law where she focused on Entertainment Law specifically, film and television. While in law school she focused on researching meaningful legal solutions to gender discrimination behind the scenes by empowering female filmmakers, which lead to her current legal research. She previously worked with the programming team at the Nashville Film Festival. When not trying to combat rampant sexism in Hollywood, you can find her pretending to be a stand up paddle board racer or drowning in coffee working on a screenplay. This HWF Monthly Gathering took place on December 5th, 2017 at Impact Hub Honolulu. Free and open to the public. About HWF Monthly Gatherings: Using a screening and discussion format, our gathering series invites women filmmakers and women involved in the film industry to discuss their work, exchange experience, share their expertise and personal reflections about the making of films and the workings of the industry. http://www.hawaiiwomeninfilmmaking.org

5 Ways to Save Legal Fees On a Film or Video Project By: Nikia Furman, Film Maker 1. Get signed contracts before you engage with others services or collaboration. 2. Write your own contract, or even make a simple list, with all the details you think are necessary and then email it to your attorney before meet in person or on the phone. It serves as a quick reference for you attorney and can save them a lot of time asking you what you want. They just have to fill in the details you may have overlooked. 3. Set a budget for legal fees. Treat them like every other crew member. If you are on a tight budget, keep looking for an attorney until you find one who agrees to the amount you are offering. They can adjust the services they offer to fit your budget. If you can't find anyone that says yes, raise your budget and try again. 4. Fresh Meat: Use an attorney who is new to the film and video industry. They'll sometimes work for half the price of other attorneys. It will give you some legal security and clout when negotiating contracts. Watch out though! They also tend to write unnecessarily large contracts and are prone to bill for more hours. 5. Anarchy! Some attorneys like to be really vague and make it seem like understanding legal contracts and the legal system is way above you. Anarchists believe that we don't need third parties like government and attorney's interfering. The truth is, we could all live without attorneys if we simply communicated clearly with each other, had perfect memories and were all honest. Attorneys help people communicate more clearly with each other in documents that everyone can reference when they forget (whether on accident or on purpose) what they agreed to in the first place. So, if an attorney isn't being clear with you up front, or seems even moderately intimidating, save yourself trouble and find someone nicer. After all, its a free country! One more thing, keep in mind that law is more of an art form than a science. Any contract is open to interpretation by the courts. More experienced attorneys will know what has worked in the past for all parties involved.
